Fence & Gate Installation in South Houston, TX
Wood, chain-link, wrought-iron, aluminum and vinyl fences, plus driveway gates, automatic openers and commercial fencing, built and repaired for South Houston from our Galveston base. The checker below runs your plan against it.

Mustang Fencing Services installs and repairs wood, chain-link, wrought-iron, aluminum and vinyl fences, plus driveway gates, automatic gate openers and commercial fencing, for South Houston, TX from our Galveston base at 1105 Avenue H. South Houston is an incorporated city in Harris County, separate from the City of Houston, with 16,153 residents at the 2020 census. Its code (Chapter 6, Sec. 6-5) requires a permit from the building official to erect, move, repair, add to or structurally alter a fence. In the front zone of a residential lot it caps wood, brick and masonry at 3 ft, chain link at 5 ft and wrought iron at 6 ft, and along side and rear lines it allows up to 6 ft 6 in.

What we install in South Houston
We build and repair the range of fencing and gates South Houston properties ask for, from our Galveston base:
- Wood privacy and picket fences in cedar and pine.
- Chain link, which the city code allows at a higher height than wood in the front zone.
- Wrought iron, the tallest option the code allows in a front zone, plus aluminum for open, ornamental fencing. Aluminum is not named in the code text, so ask the city first.
- Vinyl, subject to the same question.
- Gates: walk gates and driveway gates, automatic gate openers and access control, plus gate and fence repair.
- Commercial and industrial security fencing for businesses and multifamily properties.
Financing is available through the providers on our financing page, subject to credit approval.
Check your South Houston fence against the city code
Enter your plan to see how it lines up with the City of South Houston code (Chapter 6, Sec. 6-5, and the zoning ordinance, Sec. 6.4). It is a quick check, not a permit decision, and it does not cover deed restrictions.
General guidance, not a permit decision: the City of South Houston Division of Building Inspections makes the actual call, (713) 947-7700. Based on the City of South Houston Code of Ordinances, Ch. 6 Sec. 6-4 to 6-7 and Appendix A Sec. 6.4, checked November 5, 2026. The fee shown is the formula in the code text; the city’s fee list is higher, so confirm the current fee.
Permits, height and placement in South Houston
Under Sec. 6-5, no fence may be erected, moved, repaired, added to or structurally altered without a permit issued by the building official. That includes repairs, which is unusual. Applications need a survey in duplicate and scaled plans showing the lot, the improvements on it, and the location, height and type of each fence. The line has to be staked on the ground before the permit is issued, and the city inspects the finished fence.
The code lists wood, chain link, wrought iron and masonry as fence materials. It sets caps by material and by where the fence sits: in a residential area, no fence taller than 3 ft if wood, brick, shrubbery or masonry, 5 ft if chain link, or 6 ft if wrought iron, may go along the property line, along side lines inside the front setback area, or between the front building line and the street. Along the side lines behind the front setback line and along the rear line, the cap is 6 ft 6 in, including a bottom board. The zoning ordinance (Appendix A, Sec. 6.4) words it differently, as fences “less than six feet high” behind the main building, so ask the building official which figure applies to a 6 ft privacy fence on your lot.
Other rules: keep the view clear within 25 ft of a street corner; stay 5 ft off the street-side property line on Spencer, Allen-Genoa, South Shaver, College, Winkler, South Richey and Houston Boulevard; never build on a city right of way, easement, alley or street (Sec. 6-4) or in a parkway (Sec. 19-16). A fence that was lawful before the rules changed can’t be repaired except in line with them, and one needing repairs over 50 percent of its value must be rebuilt to the current rules (Sec. 6-7).
For businesses (Sec. 6-5(d)(4)), wood, brick or masonry fences are capped at 3 ft, chain link and wrought iron at 8 ft, and owners in C1, C2, R5C and M districts may add barbed wire on top of a security fence if the total stays at 10 ft or less. Pool and spa enclosures must be 4 ft to 6 ft 6 in, with self-closing, latching gates.

Deed restrictions and HOAs in South Houston
The city code is only one layer. Subdivisions and homeowner associations can have their own rules on height, material and placement, and those are separate from the city permit. Read your deed restrictions or ask your association before you pick a height or a style, and get approvals in writing. We can’t see your subdivision’s documents for you, so bring them to the estimate.

Pool and spa enclosures
South Houston requires swimming pools, spas and hot tubs to be completely enclosed by a fence between 4 ft and 6 ft 6 in high, with every gate fitted with a self-closing spring and a safety latch (Sec. 6-5(d)(7)). Ask to see the latch and hinge hardware that will be used before you approve a pool gate.
