The short answer

Mustang Fencing Services installs walk gates, driveway and estate entry gates, automatic gates and commercial gates in iron, aluminum, wood, vinyl, composite and chain link across Galveston County. Decide three things in order. Width: at least 10 ft clear for one car, about 18 ft for two side by side. Layout: a swing gate needs clear ground as deep as each leaf is wide; a slide gate needs straight fence line beside the opening instead. Automation: at a Galveston home, an automated vehicle gate must be built to ASTM F2200 with a UL 325 operator.

10 ftMinimum driveway access to a lot in the City of Galveston (LDR 6.302)
½Swing depth of a double gate compared with a single gate of the same opening
40%Minimum cantilever tail as a share of the opening (CLFMI)
6 ftMinimum distance from an automatic gate to its keypad or controls (UL 325)

Start with what goes through it

A gate is sized by the widest thing that has to pass, and laid out by the ground around it. A walk gate for people and trash carts is a different job from a double drive gate for two cars, and both are different from a cantilever gate across a commercial yard.

Three measurements settle most of it: the opening between the gate posts, the clear, level ground inside the opening (for a swing gate), and the straight fence line beside it (for a slide gate). Then decide whether it will ever open itself, because an automated gate is built differently from the start.

The planner below runs those numbers. The grid after it links every gate page on this site.

Geometry: a swing leaf sweeps a quarter circle as long as the leaf. A V-track gate parks beside the opening on a ground rail twice the opening’s length (iDeal instructions). A cantilever gate is the opening plus a back tail of at least 40% of the opening (CLFMI guide specification); some makers call for more. Widths: 10 ft minimum driveway access and 9 ft per parked car (Galveston LDR 6.302, 8.201); 32 in clear on an accessible route (2010 ADA Standards); 20 ft across a fire lane (2021 IFC D103.5). Automation rules from UL 325 and ASTM F2200. A planning aid, not a design; we measure and check the site at the estimate.

Four plan views of a 14-foot driveway opening: a single swing leaf sweeping 14 feet deep, a double swing gate with two 7-foot leaves sweeping 7 feet deep and a center drop rod, a V-track slide gate parked 14 feet beside the opening on a 28-foot ground rail, and a cantilever slide gate needing 21 feet 6 inches of fence line with a clear driveSingle swingOne 14-ft leafDrive14 ft deep14 ft openingDouble swingTwo 7-ft leavesDrivecenter drop rod7 ft deep14 ft openingV-track slideParks beside the opening on a ground railDrive14 ft to parkGround rail 28 ft (2×)Cantilever slideOpening + a back tail; nothing on the driveDrive14 ft + 7′6″ tail = 21′6″Clear drive

Same opening, four very different footprints. Swing gates take depth inside the lot; slide gates take length along the fence. The cantilever tail here uses one maker’s 7′6″ figure for an 11–14 ft opening; the industry minimum is 40% of the opening (5′7″ at 14 ft).

How much room a 14-ft opening needs, by layout

Feet of clear space each layout needs when open: depth inside the opening for swing gates, straight fence line beside it for slide gates.

Arithmetic: a swing leaf sweeps a radius equal to its length (14 ft single, 7 ft each for a pair). V-track: the gate parks beside the opening, and its rail is twice the opening (28 ft) per the iDeal instructions. Cantilever: 14 + 40% × 14 = 19.6 ft (CLFMI 32 31 13 minimum back frame); 14 + 7.5 = 21.5 ft using the Anchor SURTRAC table.

Swing or slide: the short version

Swing gates need no track or tail, but each leaf sweeps a quarter circle as long as itself. One 14-ft leaf needs 14 ft of clear, level ground inside the opening; two 7-ft leaves need 7 ft, plus a drop rod into a concrete receiver at the center. On a drive that rises into the lot, the leaf tip needs extra clearance equal to the leaf length times the grade. See single vs double and gates on sloped drives.

Slide gates need room along the fence instead. A V-track gate rolls on a ground rail twice the opening long, which must stay level and clear of sand and debris. A cantilever gate hangs from rollers on posts beside the opening, with a tail of at least 40% of the opening, so nothing crosses the drive. See sliding vs swing, cantilever vs V-track and how much space a sliding gate needs.

Walk gates are sized by clear width, not post to post: 32 in clear on an accessible route under the ADA Standards, and wide enough for the biggest cart or mower you roll through (walk gate widths). Around a pool, the gate is part of the barrier: it opens outward, away from the pool, and must be self-closing and self-latching (2021 ISPSC §305.3).

The operator is the small part. The layout around it is set by UL 325 and ASTM F2200: controls out of reach of the moving gate, entrapment protection in each direction, signs on both sides and a separate gate for people. Loops and sensor types vary by system; this shows one common arrangement.

Automatic gates: what changes

In the City of Galveston, the residential code adopted in 2023 includes IRC Appendix AO: at a one- or two-family home, a vehicle gate that is to be automated must meet ASTM F2200, and its opener must be listed to UL 325. The operator has to be the right class for the site (Class I for homes of one to four families, Class II for apartments of five or more units, hotels, stores and other sites open to the public, Class III for industrial yards closed to the public) and rated for the gate’s weight and length.

The layout changes too. Keypads and buttons go at least 6 ft from the moving gate, there are two warning signs, people get a separate walk gate, and each direction of travel where someone could be caught needs entrapment protection. An open swing leaf should stay 16 in from walls and columns unless sensors cover the gap. On a flood-prone lot, keep the controls and batteries up high: Galveston’s floodplain rules put new electrical equipment at least 18 in above base flood elevation. Electric gates covers the gate; access control covers remotes, keypads, telephone entry and loops.

Commercial sites and fire lanes. A gate across a fire apparatus access road needs the fire marshal’s approval, at least 20 ft of clear width (12 ft for each side of a divided road), manual opening by one person and a UL 325 operator on an F2200 gate (2021 IFC Appendix D, adopted by the City). The commercial gate page covers cantilever gates and operator classes for busy sites.

What happens at the free estimate

We measure the opening and the ground on both sides of it, check the grade, drainage and anything the gate has to clear, and note where power could come from if it will be automated. We confirm which rules apply: the City’s front-yard limits, any HOA or historic-district step, a fire lane on commercial sites. Then we go through swing or slide, single or double, the material and hardware, and give you a written estimate after the visit.

What changes the price and the schedule: the opening width and gate height; swing or slide; single or double; the material and frame; the gate posts or columns and their footings; automation, access control and power; site grade and access; and any HOA, permit or fire-marshal approval that has to come first. Questions we get about this

What kinds of gates does Mustang Fencing Services install?
Walk gates, driveway and estate entry gates, double drive gates, automatic gates with access control, security and commercial gates, and farm-style gates, in wrought iron, aluminum, wood, vinyl, composite and chain link, across Galveston County.
How wide should a driveway gate be?
At least as wide as the driveway it closes, and at least 10 feet clear for one car, which is the City of Galveston’s minimum driveway access to a lot. For two cars side by side, plan about 18 feet, since the City counts 9 feet per parked car, plus room for mirrors.
Should my driveway gate swing or slide?
It depends on the space. A swing gate needs clear, level ground inside the opening as deep as each leaf is wide: 14 feet for one 14-foot leaf, 7 feet for a pair. A slide gate needs straight fence line beside the opening instead: about the opening width for a V-track gate, plus a level rail, or the opening plus at least 40% for a cantilever gate.
What does Galveston require for an automatic gate at a home?
The City’s residential code, adopted in 2023, includes IRC Appendix AO: a vehicle gate that is to be automated must meet ASTM F2200, and its opener must be listed to UL 325. In practice that means a Class I operator rated for the gate, entrapment protection in each direction, controls at least 6 feet from the gate, two warning signs and a separate walk gate.
Can you automate a gate I already have?
Often, if the gate and posts can carry an operator and the gate can be brought up to ASTM F2200. Some older gates need changes first, such as removing a walk door built into the vehicle leaf or closing gaps. We look at the gate and posts at the estimate.
Do pool gates have special rules?
Yes. A pool gate is part of the barrier. Under the 2021 ISPSC, which the City’s pool permit adopts, pedestrian gates open outward away from the pool and must be self-closing and self-latching, and the barrier is at least 48 inches tall.
What affects the cost of a gate?
The opening width and height, swing or slide, single or double, the material and frame, the posts or columns, automation and access control, power, site grade and access, and any approvals. We give a written estimate after a free on-site visit.
