Driveway Gate Installation in Galveston, TX

Single swing, double swing or slide; wood, vinyl, aluminum, iron-style steel or chain link; manual now or automated later. The right driveway gate starts with three measurements: the opening, the clear room around it and the slope of the drive. Here is how to choose before anything is built.

The short answer

Choose the gate from the site, then the style. A swing gate needs clear ground inside the opening as deep as each leaf is wide: a pair of 6 ft leaves sweeps 6 ft, a single 12 ft leaf sweeps 12 ft. On a drive that rises into the lot, the tip of the leaf needs extra clearance equal to its length times the grade. A slide gate needs room along the fence instead. A V-track runs twice the opening. A cantilever gate needs the opening plus a tail: one maker lists 7′6″ for an 11–14 ft opening, but nothing crosses the drive. In a City of Galveston residential front yard, a solid fence or wall is capped at 4 ft, or 5 ft if it is at least 60% open. If the gate may ever be automated, Galveston's adopted residential code requires an automated gate at a home to meet ASTM F2200, so decide that now.

Four measurements pick the gate

1. The opening. Measure the width between posts or columns, then think about how you'll use it: the widest vehicle, a trailer or boat, and whether you turn in from a narrow street. Our driveway gate width guide goes through it.

2. The room inside. A swing leaf sweeps a quarter circle as deep as it is wide. Parked cars, steps, planters or a garage close to the gate can rule out a single wide leaf. A pair of leaves halves the depth. See single vs double driveway gates.

3. The room beside it. A slide gate parks along the fence, so it needs a clear, reasonably level run beside the opening: at least the opening for a V-track, more for a cantilever. Walls, trees, meters and the property line all count. See how much space a sliding gate needs and slide vs swing gates.

4. The slope. If the drive rises into the lot, an inward-swinging leaf runs into the rising grade, while a slide gate moves across the slope instead of up it.

Then choose the look: wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron or chain link, usually matched to the fence beside it. For grand, estate-scale entries with columns and custom metalwork, see estate entry gates.

Four plan views of the same 12 foot driveway opening. A double swing gate with two 6 foot leaves sweeps 6 feet deep into the property. A single 12 foot swing leaf sweeps 12 feet deep. A V-track slide gate rolls on a ground track 24 feet long, twice the opening. A cantilever slide gate has a 7 foot 6 inch tail and needs 19 and a half feet of clear run beside the opening, with no track across the drive DOUBLE SWING · TWO 6 FT LEAVES 6 FT DEEP STREET SIDEPROPERTY SIDE SINGLE SWING · ONE 12 FT LEAF 12 FT DEEP STREET SIDE V-TRACK SLIDE · ROLLS ON A GROUND TRACK OPEN TRACK 24 FT = 2 × OPENING 12 FT OPENING CANTILEVER SLIDE · NO TRACK IN THE OPENING OPEN 12 FT OPENING RUN-BACK 19½ FT TAIL 7′6″

Swing leaves need clear ground as deep as the leaf is wide. V-track: the track runs twice the opening (iDeal V-track instructions). Cantilever run-back: opening plus the overhang in Anchor Fence's SURTRAC table (6′6″ for 6–10 ft openings, 7′6″ for 11–14 ft, 10′ for 15–22 ft, 12′ for 23–30 ft). Tip rise = leaf length × grade. Leaves over 16 ft are past the widest leaf in one commercial steel line's gate-post table. A planning aid, not a site survey.

Swing or slide?

Swing gates are the simplest and most common: posts or columns, hinges, a latch, and for a pair — see our double door gate page for sizing and hardware specific to two-leaf gates — a drop rod into a center stop (how drop rods and center stops work). Their limits are the sweep, the slope, and weight: the hinges and the post carry the whole leaf, so wide leaves need heavy posts. A solid leaf also catches wind like a sail when it's open (see wind and driveway gates on the island).

V-track slide gates roll on wheels along a steel track fixed to the drive. The maker's instructions call for a level track, anchored to the grade, running twice the length of the opening. The catch is the track itself: stones, sand, hoses or a lip in the concrete stop the wheels.

Cantilever slide gates hang from rollers on posts beside the opening, balanced by a tail, so nothing crosses the drive. They need the longest clear run, and one maker of cantilever hardware notes they can be used on an incline if hung high enough to clear the highest point. We compare the two slide types in detail in cantilever vs V-track slide gates.

How much room each type needs for a 12 ft opening

Swing gates need clear depth inside the property. Slide gates need clear run along the fence beside the opening. Same opening, four footprints.

Side profile of a driveway that rises into the property behind a swing gate. The open leaf is level, but the ground under it rises, so the far end of the leaf strikes the grade. The extra clearance needed at the tip equals the leaf length times the grade. Example: a 12 foot leaf on an 8 percent grade needs about 11 and a half inches more at its tip than at the hinge; two 6 foot leaves need about 5 and three quarter inches HINGE POST LEAF HITS THE GRADE HERE RISE = LEAF × GRADE OPEN LEAF LENGTH STREETDRIVE RISES INTO THE LOT Example: a 12 ft leaf on an 8% grade needs 12 × 12 in × 0.08 ≈ 11½ in more room at its tip than at the hinge. Two 6 ft leaves halve it (≈ 5¾ in). A slide gate moves along the fence line, so the drive's uphill slope doesn't block it.

Check the slope before choosing a swing gate. Shorter leaves, a gate hung higher, grading, or a slide gate that runs along the fence line are the usual answers.

Material: match the fence, the salt and the future operator

  • Wood matches a wood privacy fence and is easy to customize; wide wood leaves need a steel frame or proper bracing to resist sagging. See wood gates.
  • Vinyl won't rot and matches vinyl fences; ask what frame is inside the gate. See vinyl gates.
  • Aluminum is light and doesn't rust, which is kind to hinges and operators near the water. See aluminum gates.
  • Iron-style steel is heavy and suits arches and custom work; keep its coating intact in salt air. See wrought iron gates.
  • Chain link is the practical choice for large openings, yards and work areas. See chain link gates.

If the gate may be automated later, the material affects the operator too: weight and wind area both count. See electric gates.

From estimate to working gate

  1. Free on-site estimate. We measure the opening, the room inside and beside it, the slope, and anything in the way, and ask how you'll use the gate and whether it may be automated.
  2. Choice and written price. Gate type, material, posts or columns, hinges or rollers, latch or drop rod, and any operator, in writing.
  3. Permits and approvals. City and HOA questions where they apply.
  4. Installation. Posts set, the gate hung or the track and rollers set, and everything adjusted to swing or roll freely.
  5. Walkthrough. We test it with you before we leave.

What affects cost and timing

We give a written price after the free on-site visit. The main things that move it:

  • Width and type. A pair of swing leaves, a V-track gate and a cantilever gate cost differently for the same opening.
  • Material and design. Custom arches, infill and finishes add fabrication time.
  • Posts and columns. Heavier posts for wide leaves, or new masonry columns.
  • Site work. Slope, concrete for a track, and clearing the run for a slide gate.
  • Automation. An operator, safety sensors, entry controls and power.

Questions we get about this

Should my driveway gate swing or slide?
Swing if there is clear, fairly level ground inside the opening as deep as the leaves are wide. Slide if the drive is short, rises into the lot, or parked cars sit close to the gate, and there is a clear run along the fence beside the opening. The planner on this page checks both.
How much room does a slide gate need?
At least the width of the opening along the fence for a V-track gate, whose track runs twice the opening. A cantilever gate needs the opening plus its tail: one maker lists 6′6″ for 6–10 ft openings, 7′6″ for 11–14 ft, 10 ft for 15–22 ft and 12 ft for 23–30 ft.
Can I automate my driveway gate later?
Usually, but in the City of Galveston an automated gate at a one- or two-family home must meet ASTM F2200 and use a UL 325 listed opener (IRC Appendix AO, as adopted). A gate built without that in mind may need changes first, such as removing the latch or adding a separate walk gate. See electric gates.
How tall can a driveway gate be in a Galveston front yard?
The Land Development Regulations limit a solid fence or wall in a residential front yard to 4 ft, or 5 ft if it is at least 60% transparent, and residential fences to 8 ft elsewhere. Ask the city how that applies to your gate and columns before ordering, and check HOA rules too.
Do driveway gates need to be wind-rated on Galveston Island?
A solid leaf catches far more wind than an open picket design, especially when open, so design and hardware matter more for solid gates. See wind and driveway gates on the island.
Do you offer financing for a driveway gate?
Yes, through the providers listed on our financing page, subject to credit approval. Terms vary by lender.
Do I need HOA approval for a driveway gate?
If your deed restrictions require architectural approval for improvements, yes. Texas Property Code 202.023 lets an HOA regulate the type of fencing and, where the driveway meets a road with two or more marked lanes, require the gate to be set back at least 10 ft from the right-of-way. Apply with a site plan, height, width, material and color. See HOA approval for a driveway gate.
Will a swing gate work if my driveway slopes?
Yes, if it can swing fully open without touching the ground. A gate is hung level, so when the ground rises into the swing, the gap under the closed gate has to equal the rise under the open leaf’s tip plus about 3 in of clearance: a 14 ft leaf over an 8% rise needs about 16.4 in, while the 7 ft leaves of a double gate need about 9.7 in. On an automatic gate, a bottom edge between 4 and 16 in above the ground needs a bottom-edge contact sensor. See swing gates on a sloped driveway.
How much gap should be under a driveway gate?
Enough to clear the highest ground the gate passes over, and about 3 in where the ground allows: the chain link industry’s guide specification (CLFMI 32 31 13) calls for 3 in under swing and slide gates, grade permitting. An automatic gate must not drag, and on an automatic swing gate a gap of more than 4 in and less than 16 in anywhere in its swing needs a bottom-edge contact sensor. Pool and security gates have tighter limits; see how much gap should be under a gate.
