Quality vinyl gate kits are built around an internal steel or aluminum frame so the panel doesn’t sag under its own weight. Ask to see the frame in the gate you’re quoted. PVC and vinyl are the same material (polyvinyl chloride), so a “PVC gate” and a “vinyl gate” are the same thing. What changes is the design: a simple utility gate for a side yard or dog run, or a styled gate matched to the fence.

What makes a vinyl gate last

Most vinyl gate problems start at the hinge post, not the gate. A vinyl post is hollow, and a gate hanging off it pulls on it every time it opens. Vinyl gate makers deal with this in two ways: an aluminum insert inside the hinge post, or filling the post with concrete and rebar. Either one has to be done when the post is set, not afterwards.

The other details that matter:

• Hinges near the top and bottom corners of the gate, where they carry the load best.
• Plumb posts and a level gate. If the hinge post leans, the gate won’t hang level, and no hinge adjustment fully fixes it.
• The top rail lined up with the fence rail, so the gate reads as part of the fence.
• The latch on the house side, with an outside release if you need to open it from the street side.
• Hardware for salt air. Vinyl won’t rust, but hinges, screws and latches can. On the coast, ask what the hardware is made of.

Vinyl gates in a pool barrier

The City of Galveston’s pool permit application requires new pools to meet the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. For gates, Section 305.3 says:

• Pedestrian gates open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching. They must also accept a locking device.
• At a home, a latch release that can be reached from outside (and isn’t a self-locking type) must be at least 54 inches above the ground.
• If the only release is on the pool side, it must be at least 3 inches below the top of the gate, and openings within 18 inches of the latch can’t exceed ½ inch.
• On a double gate, at least one leaf is secured in place and the other has a self-latching device.
• The barrier, gate included, is at least 48 inches tall.

What affects cost and timing

We give you a written price after a free on-site visit. The main things that move it:

• Width and height. A double driveway gate needs a heavier frame and more hardware than a single walk gate.
• Panel style. Solid privacy panels use more material than picket or ranch-rail styles.
• Internal framing and hinge-post reinforcement, which add cost but prevent sagging.
• Hardware. Heavy-duty or self-closing hinges and pool-rated latches cost more than basic hardware.
• Posts. Adding a gate to an existing fence can mean replacing or reinforcing a post.
