Farm-Style Gate Installation in Galveston County, TX

A farm-style gate is a working gate in a pasture, ranch-rail or field fence: a tube, panel, wire or rail gate wide enough for what has to pass through it. Size it to your widest machine and your animals, hang it level with the fence, and set it between brace assemblies so the posts don’t lean.

The short answer

Size a farm gate by what goes through it. Extension guidance puts any horse gate at 4 ft or more, 8 ft if equipment may pass, and pasture gates for tractors, mowers and trucks at 14 to 16 ft. Hang it level with the top of the fence. USDA NRCS Texas requires a brace assembly on both sides of every gate opening, with the gate’s galvanized or painted hinges attached directly to a brace post, and posts buried at least 3 ft.

What a farm-style gate is for

On a larger lot, a gate is a working part of the fence. It lets a mower, a tractor, a trailer or a horse through, many times a week. That changes what matters:

  • Width comes from your widest machine, not from the look of the fence.
  • Strength comes from the posts and braces it hangs on. A heavy gate on an unbraced post pulls it over.
  • Latching matters because animals lean on gates. Horses tend to gather at them, so the gate has to be sturdy and safe.
  • Finish matters near the coast. The NRCS spec calls for galvanized or painted hinges; steel posts must be painted or galvanized.

What happens at the estimate

  1. What passes through. Your widest machine, trailers, and the animals that use the gate.
  2. Where the gate goes in the fence line, which way it swings, and the ground: slope, low spots and soil.
  3. The fence it joins. Wire, wood rail or vinyl rail, and its height, so the gate matches and hangs level with the top.
  4. Posts and braces on both sides, sized to the gate.

What affects cost and timing

  • Width. Wider gates mean longer leaves, heavier hinges and bigger posts, or a second leaf.
  • Type and material. Wire gates cost least; tube, panel, wood rail and vinyl rail gates cost more.
  • Braces. Two brace assemblies per opening, and deeper posts in sandy or wet ground.
  • How many gates. Walk gates, pasture gates and a drive entrance are each priced in.
  • Automation. An operator, power or solar, and the safety devices.

How wide should a farm gate be?
Wide enough for what goes through it. University of Georgia Extension guidance puts any horse gate at 4 ft or more, 8 ft or more if equipment may pass, and pasture gates for tractors, mowers, fertilizer trucks and wagons at 14 to 16 ft.
How tall should a farm gate be?
Level with the top of the fence it sits in. University of Georgia Extension says fences dividing horse pastures can be 54 inches high.
Does a farm gate need braced posts?
Yes. The USDA NRCS Texas fence specification requires a brace assembly on both sides of every gate opening, and gates hung on galvanized or painted hinges attached directly to a brace assembly post.
How deep do gate posts go?
The NRCS Texas specification buries brace and gate posts at least 3 ft, and says sandy and consistently wet soils need more depth. On a barbed wire fence, gate posts are at least 2⅜ in steel or 6 in wood.
Do I need to leave a gate unlocked in Texas?
For fences around cleared land in cultivation, Texas Agriculture Code §143.002 requires a gate at least 10 ft wide and unlocked for every three miles of fence running in the same general direction.
Should I put a cattle guard at my entrance instead of a gate?
Only if the animals are cattle and nobody needs to close the entrance. University of Georgia Extension says cattle guards don’t work well for horses, which often try to jump across or walk through and injure their legs, and a guard can’t be closed or locked against people. The USDA cattle guard plan published by Mississippi State University Extension suggests a wide gate beside the guard for livestock and extra-wide equipment, and on a Texas county road the commissioners court must authorize the guard (Transportation Code §251.009). Can a farm gate be turned into a bump gate?
Often, yes. Bump gate kits bolt onto ordinary farm gates: one maker, Bump N’ Drive, says its kit is most suited to pipe rail gates and also fits many other kinds. The posts are what change. The maker calls for an 8 in wood hinge post for gates up to 20 ft, a 6 in latch post set after the gate is hung, 2½ to 3 in from the gate end, and a gate wheel on gates 12 ft and longer. NRCS Texas still requires a brace assembly on both sides of the opening. A bump gate opens for any vehicle that pushes it unless it is locked, so it keeps livestock in but is not access control. Can a farm gate be automated?
Yes. An automated gate must be built to ASTM F2200 with an operator listed to UL 325. Where mains power is far from the gate, ask about solar. See our electric gate and solar gate pages.
