Commercial Fencing in Galveston County, TX
Perimeter fencing and access gates for businesses, HOAs and multifamily communities, industrial sites and municipal property. The decisions that matter are the security grade of the fabric or panel, the gate type at each access point, and which local height and material rules apply to a nonresidential or mixed-use lot.

Commercial fencing covers any nonresidential or mixed-use property: a business, an HOA or multifamily common area, an industrial site, or municipal land. The City of Galveston caps nonresidential fence height at 8 feet (12 feet for a tennis court enclosure), sets which materials are allowed, and limits barbed or razor wire to a short list of qualifying uses. Chain link fabric is specified by wire gauge (a lower number is heavier wire), and an automated gate has to meet ASTM F2200 and be listed to UL 325.

Who this page is for
If you own, manage or maintain a nonresidential or mixed-use property in Galveston County, this is the fencing and gate decision set that applies to you:
- Businesses — offices, retail, restaurants and self-storage wanting a secure, presentable perimeter.
- HOAs and multifamily communities — community fencing, pool enclosures and gated entries shared by many residents. For the full rundown of entry/amenity gates, access control and the board approval and budgeting process, see HOA & community fencing.
- Industrial and agricultural sites — yards, storage areas and equipment compounds that may qualify for barbed or razor wire.
- Municipal and institutional property — schools, utility sites and public facilities with their own approval process.
Residential fencing is covered on our wood, chain link, aluminum and iron fence pages. For the vehicle and pedestrian gates that go with a commercial perimeter, see commercial gates and automatic gate installation.
Who we fence for
Every segment below is still the same decision set as the rest of this page: security grade, gate type, and the height and material rules for a nonresidential or mixed-use lot.
Material and security-grade decision table
| Option | What it is | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galvanized chain link, standard gauge | #11 gauge (0.120 in) fabric, galvanized steel posts | General-purpose yards and perimeters where cost matters most | Lighter wire is easier to cut or push through than heavier gauge |
| Galvanized or vinyl-coated chain link, commercial gauge | #9 gauge (0.148 in) fabric, the heavier of the two common gauges | Higher-traffic or higher-value sites: storage, equipment yards, loading areas | Costs more than lighter gauge; still an open-mesh fence, not a barrier to sightlines |
| Chain link with privacy slats | Slats woven into the mesh, closing most of the openings | Screening a yard, dumpster or equipment area from the street | Acts like a solid panel in wind (CLFMI coefficient 1 vs 6.4 for open mesh), so posts may need to be larger or closer together |
| Ornamental aluminum or steel picket | Galvanized steel or aluminum tubular pickets, powder-coated (ASTM F2408 covers the steel version) | A presentable street-facing fence for an office, HOA entry or storefront | More open sightline than chain link or a solid screen; not a security barrier on its own |
| Barbed or razor wire top | Strands or coils added above a fence at least 6 ft tall | Only utility, protective-care, correctional, industrial or agricultural property, or where required by law | Not allowed if the fence is visible from a public street outside those uses — LDR §2.601.C |
City of Galveston LDR §2.601 (height, materials, barbed/razor wire); CLFMI Wind Load Guide WLG 2445 (wire gauge diameters and mesh wind coefficients); ASTM F2408 scope (ornamental galvanized-steel tubular-picket fence systems). Checked Oct 7, 2026.
Access gates: cantilever, slide, and the pedestrian gate you still need
Every commercial perimeter needs at least one vehicle gate, and most need a separate gate for people. Two vehicle-gate types cover most commercial driveways:
- Cantilever slide gate. The gate rolls on carriages mounted to posts and overhangs the opening when open — no ground track to clog with debris or trip a wheelchair. ASTM F1184 Type II calls for a back-frame overhang of at least 40% of the opening.
- V-track (ground-track) slide gate. A V-shaped track set in the ground guides the bottom of the gate. It needs a trench and a level track the full length of travel, and the track itself can be blocked by debris.
Either type can be manual or automated. An automated gate has to meet ASTM F2200 and be listed to UL 325: that includes a monitored entrapment-protection system, two warning signs, controls at least 6 ft from the gate, and a separate gate for pedestrians so people aren't using the vehicle gate. See our commercial gate page for swing gates and fire-lane access, and automatic gate installation for operators, access control and power options.

Enter the perimeter you need fenced, the corners, and how many vehicle and pedestrian gates. You'll get a minimum post count, a footing note, the height limit that applies, and whether barbed/razor wire is even an option for the property. This is a planning aid, not a price — a free on-site estimate gives you a written number.
Post count: the straight runs (total footage minus gate openings, assumed 14 ft per vehicle gate and 4 ft per walk gate) divided into spaces of no more than 10 ft (CLFMI's recommended maximum line-post spacing), plus one terminal post at each corner and each gate jamb. Height and material rules: City of Galveston LDR §2.601 — other cities and HOA deed restrictions can be stricter. Automated-gate note: ASTM F2200 and UL 325. Planning aid only, not an engineering or permit review.
