Fence & Gate Installation in Friendswood, TX
Wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron and chain-link fences, plus driveway and automatic gates, built and repaired for Friendswood homeowners and businesses from our Galveston base. Friendswood’s zoning code has a specific front-yard fence rule, and the checker below walks through it.

Mustang Fencing Services installs and repairs wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron and chain-link fences, plus driveway gates, automatic gates and commercial fencing, for Friendswood, TX. We are based at 1105 Avenue H in Galveston and travel to the Friendswood area, which sits along the Galveston and Harris county line. Friendswood’s zoning code (Appendix C, Sec. 8.B) is unusual on one point: front-yard fences are only allowed on certain lots, and chain-link and barbed-wire fences are prohibited in residential front yards. Every fence must be installed with the finished side facing outward, and the city fee schedule lists a $75.00 permit fee line for fences.

Which Friendswood fence rules apply to your project?
Answer a few questions based on the City of Friendswood Code of Ordinances, Appendix C (Zoning) Sec. 8, and the city fee schedule. It points you to the rule to confirm before you build. It is not a permit decision, and it does not replace asking the city about your specific lot.
General guidance, not a permit decision: the City of Friendswood makes the actual call. Based on Friendswood Code of Ordinances, Appendix C Sec. 8 and Appendix D, codified through Ord. No. 2026-15 (May 4, 2026), checked November 5, 2026.
The Friendswood front-yard fence rule
Friendswood’s Appendix C (Zoning), Sec. 8.B starts with where a fence can go at all. Fences and walls are permitted in or along the edge of a required yard, with one carve-out. In a front yard, they are only allowed on lots next to FM 528, FM 2351, or FM 518 (north of FM 2351 and south of FM 528), or on lots greater than two acres, provided no hazardous visual obstruction is created. Any size lot may build a front-yard fence when all adjoining lots facing the same street or private street already have compliant front-yard fences.
On residential lots the rule goes further: decorative, transparent fences may be built in front yards on lots greater than two acres or with at least 150 feet of width at the street. Chain-link and barbed-wire fences are prohibited in residential front yards. And every fence must be installed with the finished side facing outward.

Where a single-family lot touches commercial land
Appendix C also governs the boundary between homes and business land. When a single-family use is established next to commercial, industrial or multifamily zoning, an eight-foot-high opaque fence or wall is to be erected and maintained along the property line, and the usual ten-foot landscaped buffer strip is not required in that case. In the other direction, a commercial or industrial use placed next to a residential district, or multifamily next to single-family, must install a ten-foot buffer plus the same eight-foot opaque fence. The fence or wall is to be wood, masonry or decorative concrete, or a combination, with metal only as a concealed structural element. The city’s director may determine the rule does not apply where the two uses are separated by a driveway, easement, ditch or canal at least 30 feet wide.

Permits, fees and what we could not confirm
Friendswood’s fee schedule (Appendix D) lists $75.00 for “Fences, walls, driveways, paving” under miscellaneous residential permits, plus a non-refundable permit issuance fee for non-trade permits. We did not find a plain-language fence permit page to quote, so we do not state exactly which fences need a permit. Ask the City of Friendswood before you build.
We also did not find a general height cap for backyard fences in Appendix C, so we do not state one. If you are planning something tall, ask the city for the current height rule. Many Friendswood neighborhoods also have deed restrictions or HOA rules, which are separate from the city code and can be stricter. Check yours before ordering.
