How Wide Should a Driveway Gate Be?
No Galveston rule sets a driveway gate width. Size it from the driveway and the vehicles that use it: the City treats 10 ft as the minimum driveway access to a lot and counts 9 ft of width per parked car. Then add what the gate itself needs, a swing radius or a slide gate’s roll-back space, which is where most sizing mistakes happen.

At least as wide as the driveway it closes, and never under 10 feet for vehicles. No code in the City of Galveston sets a driveway gate width, but its development rules give you the numbers to size one: the driveway access to each lot must be at least 10 feet wide (LDR 6.302(E)(2)), and a residential driveway counts 9 feet of width per parked vehicle (LDR 8.201(A)(2)). So one car needs a 10 ft clear opening; two side by side need 18 ft plus room for mirrors. Then check the gate’s own space: a swing leaf sweeps a radius equal to its length, and a cantilever slide gate is about 1.4 times the opening long, because ASTM F1184 calls for a back frame of at least 40% of the opening.

Start with the driveway, not a catalog size
Gate kits come in stock widths, but the right width is the one your driveway and vehicles need. Measure the paved width where the gate will stand, not at the street, and decide whether vehicles will pass one at a time or two side by side.
The City of Galveston doesn’t regulate gate width, but two of its rules are a good floor:
- 10 feet. In the subdivision standards, “the driveway access to each lot shall have a minimum width of 10 feet” (LDR 6.302(E)(2)). A gate narrower than that pinches the access the lot was laid out with.
- 9 feet per vehicle. For a house’s driveway to count toward its required parking, it must provide “a minimum area of 9 feet wide x 20 feet long per vehicle” (LDR 8.201(A)(2)). Two cars side by side is 18 feet.
Then add margin for what actually comes through: wide mirrors, a trailer, a boat, a delivery truck, or a drive that curves as it reaches the gate. That margin is your call; no code sets it. The sizer below lets you add it per side.

What each gate type needs beyond the opening
- Single swing. One leaf as long as the opening. It sweeps a quarter circle with a radius equal to its length, so a 12 ft leaf needs about 12 ft of clear, fairly level ground on the swing side, and all its weight hangs from one post.
- Double swing. Two leaves, each half the opening, so each sweeps half the radius. It is the usual answer for wider drives. See single vs double swing gates.
- Cantilever slide. No swing at all, which helps on a short or sloped drive, but the gate is longer than the opening. The chain link industry’s guide specification, following ASTM F1184, calls for a back frame support section of “a minimum of 40% of the opening,” so a 12 ft opening means a gate about 16.8 ft long and a matching strip of clear space beside the fence to roll into. See sliding gate space requirements and cantilever vs V-track slide gates.
Width and weight go together. A wider leaf is heavier and puts more load on the hinge post, and on an automatic gate it decides the operator you need. See driveway gates for materials and styles.

Driveway gate sizer
Enter your paved driveway width and how you use it. The sizer sets a minimum clear opening from the City’s driveway numbers, then shows what that opening means for each gate type: leaf sizes and swing radius, or slide gate length and roll-back space. No prices; it sizes the opening.
Based on City of Galveston LDR 6.302(E)(2), 8.201(A)(2) and 2.501(B)(2); CLFMI guide specification 32 31 13 (ASTM F1184 cantilever back frame at least 40% of the opening); Texas Property Code 202.023(c)(4). Read September 27, 2026. Margins are your choice, not a code number.
Rules that affect a driveway gate’s size and place
- Height in a front yard. In the City of Galveston a solid fence or wall in a front yard may be 4 feet tall, or 5 feet if at least 60 percent transparent (LDR 2.501(B)(2)); a gate in that fence line is part of it. More in HOA approval for a driveway gate.
- Setback from a laned road. An HOA may require a driveway gate to be set back at least 10 feet from the right-of-way where the driveway meets a road with at least two marked lanes (Property Code 202.023(c)(4); Transportation Code 541.302(7)). It also leaves room for a car to wait off the road while the gate opens.
- Automatic gates. Operators and gate construction fall under UL 325 and ASTM F2200; see UL 325 and ASTM F2200 explained and electric gate installation.
- Commercial and multifamily gates across a fire apparatus access road have fire code requirements of their own; see fire department access for commercial gates.
