Estate Entry Gates in Galveston County, TX
A custom entry gate designed as part of the property: a wide opening, columns or heavy gate posts, an arched or monogrammed leaf, and usually an operator and a separate walk gate. What decides whether it works is the scale, what the leaves hang on, how they open, and the rules that come with automation, front yards and historic districts.

An estate entry gate is a driveway gate designed at architectural scale. Plan the whole entry, not just the leaf: the opening, what the leaves hang on (masonry columns or steel gate posts sized to the leaf), whether they swing or slide, and where a separate walk gate goes. If it will ever be automated, ASTM F2200 shapes the design: no latch, no walk door in the vehicle leaf, no more than 4 in. of column behind an open leaf and 16 in. to other walls. In a Galveston front yard, the city’s fence limit is 4 ft solid or 5 ft if at least 60% open, so ask how it applies to your gate and columns.

What makes an entry gate an estate gate
A standard driveway gate is chosen to fit the drive. An estate entry gate is designed as part of the house and landscape, and it’s usually the first thing a visitor sees. The same few elements come up in almost every design:
- Scale. Wide openings, usually split into two leaves, and leaves tall enough to read from the street.
- What the leaves hang on. Brick or stone columns, or heavy steel gate posts. Either one has to carry the whole weight of the leaf through two hinges.
- The top line. Flat, arched (rising to the center) or dipped. An arch makes the center the tallest point, which matters where height is limited.
- The infill. Open pickets, scrollwork, a medallion or monogram panel, laser-cut sheet panels, or wood or composite boards in a steel frame. See custom gate design.
- A separate walk gate for people on foot, in the same style.
- An operator and entry system, now or later. See electric gates and gate automation and access control.
Material follows the fence line and the salt air: wrought iron (steel) gates, aluminum gates or wood gates, with estate and ornamental fencing to carry the design along the frontage.

Enter the opening and how the gate will work. You’ll see the leaf size, the minimum gate post one commercial steel line lists for it, the room it needs, and which Galveston rules and safety requirements come into play.
Gate posts: Ameristar Montage Commercial Table 1 (steel gates), an example only; masonry columns are designed separately. Cantilever run-back: the opening plus the overhang in Anchor Fence’s SURTRAC table (6′6″ for 6–10 ft, 7′6″ for 11–14 ft, 10′ for 15–22 ft, 12′ for 23–30 ft). Operator weights: LiftMaster CSW24UL (swing) and CSL24UL (slide) manuals. Automation: ASTM F2200 as printed in those manuals; DASMA TDS 353. Front yard: City of Galveston LDR §2.501. Historic: LDR §10.106. A planning aid, not an engineering check or a permit decision.
Minimum steel gate post by leaf width
One commercial ornamental steel line’s gate-post table. Wider leaves need much heavier posts; past 16 ft the table stops.
What the leaves hang on: columns or gate posts
Every pound of an estate leaf goes into two hinges and one post or column, and it pulls hardest at the top hinge. That is why the post size in the chart climbs so quickly: a 10–16 ft steel leaf calls for a 6 in. square post in that table, twice the size needed for a 4–6 ft leaf.
- Steel gate posts are sized from the manufacturer’s table for the leaf width and set in concrete.
- Brick or stone columns look the part, but a column is only as good as its core and the way the hinges are anchored into it. Ask how the column is built and how the hinge load gets into it.
- Two leaves or one. Splitting a wide opening into two leaves halves the leaf, the post load and the swing room. A drop rod and center stop hold the fixed leaf on a manual gate.
- Weight and wind. Solid infill adds weight and catches far more wind than open pickets. See whether driveway gates need to be wind-rated.
If an opening is too wide to swing, or the drive rises behind the gate, a slide gate keeps the look. Cantilever vs V-track slide gates compares the two.

If it will be automated, design for it now
Most estate gates get an operator sooner or later. The City of Galveston adopted the 2021 International Residential Code with Appendix AO (Ord. 23-012), which calls for automated vehicular gates to meet ASTM F2200 and use UL 325 listed operators. F2200 also says an existing manual gate “shall be upgraded to conform” before it is automated, so it pays to design for it from the start. As printed in LiftMaster’s operator manuals, F2200 requires:
- No latch on an automatic gate, and a separate pedestrian gate instead of a walk door built into a vehicle leaf.
- For swing gates, no more than 4 in. of column or wall behind the open leaf (from the hinge centerline) and at least 16 in. to other walls and fences, unless those zones get entrapment sensors. Swinging gates must not open into public access areas.
- For slide gates, openings screened against a 2¼ in. sphere from the bottom to 6 ft, and guarded rollers.
DASMA’s UL 325 guide adds that controls go at least 6 ft from the gate and at least two warning signs are posted. Where an entry is low-lying, see gate openers in a flood zone. For the full standard, read UL 325 and ASTM F2200 explained, and for keypads and remotes, keypad vs remote access.

Infill choices for an estate gate
| Infill | Look | Weight and wind | If automated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open pickets | Classic, see-through | Lightest; wind passes through | Check protrusions (F2200 limits them, with exceptions); slide gates need screening to 6 ft |
| Scrollwork or medallion | A custom centerpiece | More metal near the center of the leaf | Same checks; keep scroll openings in mind on a slide gate |
| Wood or composite in a steel frame | Warm and private | Heavier; a solid face catches far more wind | Compare the leaf’s weight with the operator rating |
| Laser-cut sheet panels | Modern, semi-private | Heavy sheet; mostly solid to wind | Same weight check |
Automation column: ASTM F2200 as printed in the LiftMaster CSW24UL and CSL24UL manuals. Weight and wind are relative, not calculated.

What affects cost and timing
Every estate entry is quoted after a free on-site visit. The main things that move the price and the schedule:
- Width, height and leaf count. Bigger leaves need heavier frames, posts and hinges.
- Design detail. Arches, scrollwork, medallions and custom panels take fabrication time.
- Columns. Masonry columns add their own work beyond a steel post.
- Automation and access. The operator, safety sensors, keypad or intercom, and power.
- The site. Slope, drainage, and where the controls can sit above flood water.
- Approvals. A permit, and in a historic district a certificate of appropriateness, can add review time.
