East End Historic District

Fencing in the East End Historic District

The East End became Galveston’s first locally-designated historic district in 1971 — originally about forty blocks, expanded east and north in 1994. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.

It was the island’s first residential neighbourhood, sitting directly against downtown.

Coastal Considerations

What the 1885 Fire Left Behind

After the Great Fire of 1885, entire blocks here were rebuilt in 1886 — elegant Victorian residences by local architects including Nicholas Clayton, Alfred Muller and George Stowe.

Against that architecture, ornamental iron and painted wood picket sit correctly in a way a solid modern panel does not. Fenced front yards are historically normal here, unlike the open-lawn enclaves west of Broadway.

Our Process

A Tight Grid and Alley Residences

The East End is laid out on a tight grid of lots, and it has something most Galveston neighbourhoods do not: multiple alley residences. Those rear buildings are part of what the district is, so the back of the lot matters as much as the front.

On the paperwork, the city’s fence permit asks whether the property is in a historic district or is a historic landmark. Here the answer is yes, and two attachments go with it: photographs of any existing fences on the site, and the design of the proposed fence.

That is lighter than it sounds. Most fencing is handled under administrative approval, reviewed by the historic preservation officer during the building permit process rather than at a full Landmark Commission hearing.

Common Questions

East End Galveston Fencing Questions, Answered

Does Mustang Fencing Services install fences in East End Galveston, TX?

Yes — East End Galveston is within our confirmed Galveston Island service area, along with the rest of Galveston County including League City, Texas City, La Marque, Dickinson, Santa Fe, Hitchcock, Kemah, Clear Lake Shores, Bacliff, and San Leon.

Do historic homes in East End have fence style restrictions?

The city does not publish a style list, but it does ask to see the design. Because the East End is a designated historic district, the fence permit application requires photographs of any existing fences on the site plus the design of the proposed fence, reviewed by the historic preservation officer during the permit process.

What fence material holds up best in Galveston’s salt air?

Vinyl and aluminum are popular low-maintenance choices near the coast. Properly finished wood and iron can also hold up well with the right care — we’ll walk through the tradeoffs during your free estimate.

Can you work around narrow lots and alley access?

Yes, many East End properties have narrow lots or alley-facing gates — we plan layout and access around your specific property during the estimate.

Do you offer financing for East End Galveston projects?

Yes, through GreenSky, Synchrony (including no-interest promotional periods), and Wisetack. See our financing page for current terms.
