Picket Fence Installation in Galveston, TX

A picket fence marks the yard without walling it in. Choose it in wood, vinyl, aluminum or steel. The material sets the post spacing, the upkeep and how it takes the salt air. Where the fence goes sets how tall it can be.

The short answer

A picket fence is spaced vertical pickets on two or three rails between posts. The material decides most of the job. Vinyl picket sections sit on 72″ post centers in one maker’s guide. Aluminum sits on 71½″. Wood spacing is set by the builder. The location decides the height. In a City of Galveston front yard, a fence can be 4 ft if solid or 5 ft if at least 60% transparent. Common spacing (3½″ pickets, 2½″ gaps) is only about 42% open, so most front-yard picket fences are planned at 4 ft.

Which picket fence, and where it fits

  • Wood. The classic painted or stained picket, and the lowest cost to start. It needs a finish to last; see stain vs. paint. Styles: dog-ear and spaced picket.
  • Vinyl. White or tan PVC sections that don’t need paint. The profiles are made to ASTM F964, which covers the material, not wind loads. Styles: closed picket and scalloped.
  • Aluminum. Powder-coated pickets that don’t rust. It suits salt air and pools. Styles: extended picket and puppy picket.
  • Steel or iron. The strongest and heaviest option, with spear or flat tops. It needs its coating kept intact near the Gulf. Styles: staggered, double and puppy picket.

Picket fences are most often built in front yards, around raised beach houses where they mark the lawn under and around the pilings, and along pool areas. A pool barrier has its own spacing rules. For height, transparency and spacing, use the picket fence height and spacing guide. For more privacy, see semi-privacy or privacy fencing.

Post centers: Bufftech (CertainTeed) installation guide, Cape Cod picket 72″, Danbury and contemporary picket 96″; Ultra Aluminum 3-part specification, 71½″. Wood has no maker’s figure, so pick the spacing your builder quotes. Each walk gate is taken as a 4 ft opening, and every straight run is rounded up to whole sections, so treat the counts as a planning list, not an order. Wood picket count assumes 3½″ pickets at 2½″ gaps; see the height and spacing checker to change them. Height: City of Galveston LDR §2.501(B); other cities have their own codes.

Elevation of two picket fence sections between three posts, 4 feet tall. The left section has dog-ear wood pickets and the right has pointed pickets, each on a top and bottom rail. A dimension marks the post centers: 72 inches for vinyl picket, 71 and a half inches for aluminum, and set by the builder for wood. Below grade each post sits in a concrete footing 30 inches deep. What happens at the estimate and install

  1. Free on-site estimate. We measure the run and mark the gates and corners. We check where your front yard starts, whether a pool, HOA or historic district rule applies, and which material fits.
  2. The line. The fence goes inside your property line. If you don’t know where it is, a survey or the property pins settle it before any post goes in.
  3. Posts first. Posts go in on the spacing the chosen sections need. The makers’ guides call for concrete around the posts and reinforced gate posts.
  4. Sections and gates. Sections go in between the posts. On a slope they are stepped or racked to follow the grade. The gates are then hung and adjusted.

What affects cost and timing

You get a written price after the free on-site estimate. What moves it:

  • Material. Wood costs least to start. Vinyl, aluminum and steel cost more but need less upkeep.
  • Length and corners. Every corner and end adds a post, and every straight run rounds up to whole sections.
  • Height and style. Decorative tops, closer spacing and taller sections use more material.
  • Gates. Each gate adds two reinforced posts and hardware.
  • The ground. Slopes, roots, old fence removal and concrete to cut through add time.

Questions we get about this

How tall can a picket fence be in my front yard in Galveston?
In the City of Galveston, a front-yard fence at a home can be 4 feet if it is solid, or 5 feet if it is at least 60 percent transparent. Side and rear fences can be up to 8 feet. Most picket spacings are less than 60 percent open, so plan on 4 feet unless the gaps are wide. Other cities, such as Jamaica Beach and Tiki Island, have their own codes.
Which picket fence material is best near the beach?
Vinyl and aluminum don’t rust and don’t need paint, so they suit salt air with the least upkeep. Wood gives the classic look at the lowest starting cost but needs a finish kept up. Steel is the strongest, and it needs its galvanized and powder coating kept intact.
How far apart are picket fence posts?
It depends on the material. One vinyl maker’s picket sections use 72-inch post centers, with 96 inches for its 8-foot picket styles. One aluminum maker specifies 71½ inches. Wood has no maker’s figure, so the builder sets the spacing.
Can a picket fence be a pool barrier?
Only if it meets the pool barrier rules: the height, the gap between pickets, the gap under the fence and a self-closing, self-latching gate. Many standard picket spacings are too wide. See our pool fencing page and the height and spacing guide.
Do you install matching picket gates?
Yes. Walk gates are built to match the fence, on reinforced gate posts. For a wider opening, see our driveway gate page.
Do I need approval for a picket fence in a historic district?
In a City of Galveston historic overlay district, building or changing a structure needs a certificate of appropriateness first, so check with the City’s historic preservation staff before you order materials.
Is financing available for a picket fence?
Yes. Financing is available through the providers listed on our financing page, subject to credit approval.
