Semi-Privacy Fence Installation in Galveston, TX

A semi-privacy fence screens most of the view but leaves gaps for air and light. That trade matters on the coast, where a breeze through the yard is welcome. The style you pick decides how much you see through, and from which angle.

The short answer

Semi-privacy means gaps on purpose. Spaced boards show the yard through every gap. A shadowbox puts boards on both sides of the rail so it is closed straight on and opens only at an angle. Privacy slats in chain link block about 75% to 95% of the view, depending on the slat. None of these is anywhere near the 60% see-through that a City of Galveston front yard needs for a 5 ft fence, so in a front yard plan on 4 ft; at the side and rear it can be up to 8 ft.

Which semi-privacy fence, and how much it hides

  • Spaced wood boards. One row of boards with a set gap. The simplest build; you see through every gap, more as the boards dry. See wood fences.
  • Wood shadowbox. Boards alternate on the two faces of the rails, so the gaps on one side are backed by boards on the other. It looks the same from both sides. Compare it with board-on-board in board-on-board vs. shadowbox.
  • Lattice tops. A solid lower fence with an open lattice band along the top. See board and lattice wood and lattice-top vinyl.
  • Vinyl semi-privacy. Factory panels with set gaps or alternating boards, and no paint. See semi-privacy vinyl.
  • Chain link with slats. Slats woven through the diamonds of new or existing chain link. See black and galvanized semi-privacy chain link, and what to know about privacy slats.

If you need no gaps at all, go to privacy fences. For an open front-yard look, see picket fences. Horizontal slats with gaps are covered on horizontal fences.

How private will it be?

Pick a semi-privacy style and its sizes. You get how much you see straight through, the angle where a shadowbox opens up, a board count, and the height the City of Galveston allows in a front yard.

Wood: openness = gap ÷ (board + gap). In a shadowbox the back board covers each front gap, so the overlap on each edge is (board − gap) ÷ 2, and the view opens once you stand more than atan(overlap ÷ depth) off square. The sketch ignores board thickness, which closes the view a little more. Slats: Pexco’s published “wind load & privacy factor” for each slat; see-through is taken as the rest. Height: City of Galveston LDR §2.501(B): a front-yard fence at a home is 4 ft, or 5 ft if at least 60% transparent. This is a planning aid, not a code ruling.

Three plan cuts through a fence. Spaced boards: one row of boards on a rail with gaps; a straight sight line passes through a gap. Shadowbox: boards alternate on the front and back faces of a deep rail; a straight sight line is blocked, but an angled sight line passes through. The view opens past an angle set by the overlap and the depth between the two faces. Board-on-board: two rows lapped on one side; sight lines are closed at every angle SPACED BOARDS one row, gaps between SHADOWBOX boards alternate on both sides of the rail BOARD-ON-BOARD two rows lapped on one side (privacy) Straight on: you see through every gap GAP Straight on: blocked. The same boards give three different results. Shadowbox is the middle ground: private from the street, with glimpses from an angle and air moving through.

Slats turn an open chain link fence into a screen. The more private the slat, the more wind the fence catches.

What happens at the estimate and install

  1. Free on-site estimate. We stand where the view matters, the patio, the street or the neighbor’s window, and talk about how much you want to hide from each. We check where your front yard starts and whether any other rule applies.
  2. The style and the gap. Pick the layout, then the gap. For slats, check your chain link’s mesh and wire gauge so the slats fit.
  3. Posts and rails. Posts are set in concrete on the spacing the material needs; near open water that may be closer than inland.
  4. Boards, panels or slats. Boards go on at an even gap; panels and slats follow the maker’s steps. Gates are hung and adjusted last.

What affects cost and timing

You get a written price after the free on-site estimate. What moves it:

  • Style. A shadowbox uses twice the boards of one spaced row with the same gap, because it has boards on both faces.
  • Material. Wood costs least to start; vinyl costs more and needs no stain. Slats cost least if the chain link is already there and in good shape.
  • Height and length. Taller boards and longer runs take more material.
  • Gates and the ground. Each gate adds posts and hardware; slopes, roots and old fence removal add time.

Questions we get about this

How much privacy does a semi-privacy fence give?
It depends on the style. Spaced boards show the yard through every gap, about 15 percent open with 1-inch gaps between 1×6 boards. A shadowbox with overlapping boards is closed straight on and opens only at an angle. Chain link slats block about 75 to 95 percent of the view, by the maker’s figures.
What is the difference between shadowbox and board-on-board?
A shadowbox puts boards on both faces of the rails, alternating, so it looks the same from both sides and lets air through. Board-on-board laps two rows on one side, which closes the view at every angle. See board-on-board vs. shadowbox.
Can I add privacy slats to my existing chain link fence?
Often, yes, if the slat fits your fabric. Check the mesh size and the wire gauge first: one maker’s Winged Slat fits 9-gauge fabric only, while its FinLink and HedgeLink fit a wider range. The fence also catches much more wind with slats, so the posts need to be up to it.
How tall can a semi-privacy fence be in my front yard in Galveston?
In the City of Galveston, a front-yard fence at a home can be 4 feet, or 5 feet if it is at least 60 percent transparent. Semi-privacy styles are far less open than that, so plan on 4 feet in the front yard. At the side and rear, up to 8 feet.
Does a semi-privacy fence hold up better in wind than a privacy fence?
Open gaps let some wind through, but a tight shadowbox or slatted chain link catches nearly as much as a solid fence. One slat maker publishes the same percentage for privacy and wind load. Near open water, vinyl makers call for closer posts; see our hurricane-ready fencing page.
Which semi-privacy material needs the least upkeep?
Vinyl panels and chain link slats need only washing. Wood looks the most natural and costs least to start, but needs a stain or sealer kept up; see stain vs. paint.
Is financing available for a semi-privacy fence?
Yes. Financing is available through the providers listed on our financing page, subject to credit approval.
