What Are Good Custom Wood Gate Design Ideas for a Privacy Fence Entrance?

A privacy fence’s gate is the one part everyone sees up close. Here are the design directions that actually hold up — classic arches, cutouts and carved details, horizontal slats, and the hardware and gap choices that matter once the gate is on the coast.

The short answer

The design directions homeowners pick most are an arched top for a classic look, diamond cutouts or carved details for a distinctive accent that keeps full privacy, and horizontal slat construction for a clean modern line. A planter box or garden bed set beside the gate, plus paint color and hardware (handles, strap hinges, a speakeasy cutout), dress up any of these without changing the underlying build. On the coast, two things matter beyond looks: build in a larger bottom gap than an inland install would use, since wood swells with humidity, and use hardware rated for coastal exposure rather than standard indoor-grade hinges and latches. In a Galveston front yard, an open design that is at least 60% transparent can also stand a foot taller than a solid one.

Classic, versatile designs

An arched top is the most common custom touch on an otherwise standard gate — a curved top rail instead of a flat one, built onto the same frame and bracing as any other gate (see how a wood gate is braced and hung). It pairs with almost any fence style beside it, including a lattice-topped privacy fence, without changing the fence’s own design language.

Board-on-board construction — a second layer of boards overlapping the gaps in the first — is another classic option. It uses more wood than a single layer of tight boards, so it costs a little more, but it eliminates sightlines through the gate entirely and gives both faces a similar look, which some homeowners also use on a good neighbor fence for the same reason.

Distinctive custom details

For homeowners who want something more individual: diamond or geometric cutouts — small decorative openings cut into the panel, common on cedar gates, that add a distinctive look without meaningfully compromising privacy. Carved details — hand-detailed woodwork on the gate face — create a genuinely memorable entrance when done with skill and care. Horizontal slat construction — boards mounted parallel to the ground across a rigid frame — pairs naturally with a modern horizontal-slat privacy fence and reads as a clean, continuous line at the entrance. One frame note: a horizontal layout needs its own internal verticals to carry the boards, since the gate’s main brace still has to run corner to corner underneath (see bracing direction) regardless of which way the face boards run.

Function-forward additions

A planter or garden bed set beside the gate is a practical way to add greenery right at the entrance without giving up any security or privacy — it dresses up the approach rather than the gate structure itself. Paint and hardware are a design layer on their own: even a plain square-top gate reads very differently with a bold paint color, a substantial handle, decorative strap hinges, or a small speakeasy-style viewing cutout, none of which require changing the underlying construction.

Questions we get about this

What is the most popular custom wood gate design?
An arched top over solid vertical boards is the most common custom touch — it pairs with almost any fence style and keeps full privacy.
Can a custom gate design be taller than a standard gate in my front yard?
In Galveston, yes, if it clears the same 60% transparency test the city applies to fence panels: a design that’s at least 60% open can stand up to 5 ft in a single-family front yard, versus 4 ft for a solid design.
Does a diamond cutout or carved detail weaken the gate?
Not meaningfully when sized and placed well — the gate’s strength comes from its frame and bracing (see how a wood gate is braced), not from having zero openings in the face boards.
Does a custom design change how a gate needs to be hung?
The frame, hinge placement and brace direction stay the same under any of these board layouts. A horizontal-slat design does need its own internal verticals to carry the boards, in addition to the corner-to-corner brace.
What should I change for a wood gate on the coast?
Build in a larger bottom gap than an inland install would use, since wood swells with humidity, and use hot-dip galvanized or stainless hardware rather than standard indoor-grade hinges and latches.
