PVC vs. vinyl fencing · Galveston County, TX

Is a PVC Fence the Same Thing as a Vinyl Fence?

Yes — “PVC fence” and “vinyl fence” name the same material family. The ASTM specification that governs this product calls it a PVC fence; the market usually calls it vinyl. What actually varies between bids is the additive package and construction behind that name, not the name itself.

The short answer

Both names describe the same category of product. ASTM F964, the industry specification for this material, defines a “PVC fence” as a complete system whose structural members — posts, rails, pickets and gates — are made from rigid PVC exterior profiles. The market sells the identical product as “vinyl fence.” The spec allows the profile to be a single homogeneous PVC extrusion, or a co-extrusion of two or more PVC layers. What it does not cover is wind load, or any numeric rating for how fast a cheaper blend yellows — so the name on your quote tells you less than the questions you ask the installer.

Same material, two names

PVC — polyvinyl chloride — is the resin. To make it into fencing, manufacturers extrude it with impact modifiers, UV stabilizers and a weathering package. ASTM F964, “Standard Specification for Rigid Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Exterior Profiles Used for Fencing and Railing,” is the spec that governs that finished product, and its own text calls the complete system a “PVC fence.” The market overwhelmingly markets the same product as “vinyl fence.” Neither name tells you the grade.

The spec also permits two different constructions: a single homogeneous PVC extrusion, or a co-extrusion of two or more PVC compounds in distinct layers — for example, an outer capstock layer carrying extra UV/impact additive over a structural core. Both are F964-compliant. See how this plays out in wind: vinyl fencing in Gulf Coast wind.

Before you compare PVC/vinyl quotes, ask for this in writing

“PVC” and “vinyl” name the same material family, so the word on the quote doesn’t tell you which fence will hold up better. These four questions do. Check off what each bidder has actually told you.

Where this quote stands

F964 doesn’t publish a numeric color-retention or yellowing timeline, so no page can quote you one honestly — the manufacturer’s own warranty is the real answer. This checklist only tracks what’s been put in writing; it doesn’t score or rate a specific product.

Both constructions meet ASTM F964. A thinner or lower-grade additive package — in either construction — is what shows up as early yellowing or brittleness, not the single-vs-layered choice itself.

What to ask when a quote says PVC and another says vinyl

Don’t assume the cheaper quote is the lesser product just because of the word choice, and don’t assume the pricier one is automatically better. Ask for the four items in the checklist above, in writing. That’s the information that predicts how the fence looks in year twelve — not the label on the estimate. Ask your Mustang Fencing consultant which product line and warranty coverage apply to your specific quote.

Questions we get about this

Is a "PVC fence" the same thing as a "vinyl fence"?
Yes. ASTM F964, the industry specification for rigid PVC fencing and railing, uses “PVC fence” to describe the complete product — posts, rails, pickets and gates made from rigid PVC profiles. The market commonly sells the identical product as “vinyl fence.” It’s a naming difference, not two different materials.
Does the PVC/vinyl fencing standard cover wind load?
No. ASTM F964 explicitly excludes wind load and guardrail loading from its scope (Note 2). If wind resistance matters for your site, see our page on vinyl fencing in Gulf Coast wind, or ask the manufacturer for a wind rating directly.
Is fence-grade PVC the same formula as PVC pipe?
Not necessarily. ASTM F964 is a fencing- and railing-specific specification for rigid PVC profiles built into posts, rails and pickets, with their own additive package — a different product category from plumbing-grade PVC pipe, which has its own separate ASTM specifications.
Can a vinyl fence profile be a single layer, or does it have to be layered?
Either. ASTM F964 §1.2 allows a single homogeneous PVC extrusion, or a co-extrusion of two or more PVC compounds in distinct layers — for example, a structural core with a separate outer capstock layer carrying extra UV and impact additive.
How do I clean a PVC/vinyl fence?
Manufacturer Illusions Vinyl Fence’s own FAQ recommends a non-abrasive, car-wash-type soap with a soft cloth or brush for normal maintenance, and warns that the wrong cleaner or washer can damage the material. It doesn’t name specific products or pressure-washer limits beyond that.
Does lower-grade PVC yellow or turn brittle faster?
The additive package — virgin resin content, UV stabilizers and impact modifiers — is what determines how well a PVC/vinyl fence holds its color and flexibility over time, more than the “PVC” vs. “vinyl” label on the quote. ASTM F964 doesn’t publish a numeric color-retention rating, so ask your installer for the manufacturer’s specific warranty terms on fading and cracking.
