The short answer

This is a 213-foot Red Western Cedar privacy fence installed around a La Marque home. Two things matter most at that length: how many boards and posts a run like this actually takes (arithmetic, shown in the estimator below), and that redcedar shrinks measurably as it dries — a known, published wood-science figure, not a defect — so a long run has more joints that need room to move. La Marque’s own fence permit threshold is based on height, not length, so this run is permitted the same way a short one would be.

A 213-foot cedar privacy fence for Emilyn’s property

Emilyn, a homeowner in La Marque, chose a Red Western Cedar privacy fence to enclose her property — a 213-foot run in total. Red Western Cedar is a common choice for privacy fencing in the area: it’s workable, holds a stain well, and ages to a silver-gray tone if left untreated, the same natural weathering redcedar does anywhere it’s used outdoors.

See fence & gate installation in La Marque for the City’s height and permit rules, and cedar wood fences for the material.

A dimension line spans 213 feet total run above a row of posts along a baseline, with dots marking that the run continues beyond the drawn segment. Below, one bay is enlarged to show two posts, two rails and vertical boards filling the gap edge to edge, with an 8-foot post spacing dimension labeled as the estimator’s default. 213 feet of Red Western Cedar — what the estimator below counts 213 FT TOTAL RUN ⋯ startend dots mark the run continuing — this is a representative segment, not all 213 ft drawn to scale ONE BAY, ENLARGED 8 FT SPACING (ESTIMATOR DEFAULT BELOW)

Why Red Western Cedar moves differently than pine

Wood is never fully “dry” and static — it keeps responding to humidity. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s Wood Handbook puts redcedar’s tangential shrinkage (the direction across a board’s face) at 4.7–5.2% between green and fully dry lumber. That’s a published figure for the species, not a measurement of this specific fence.

On a 213-foot run with dozens of boards, that small per-board shrinkage adds up across the whole fence line. It doesn’t mean the fence is flawed — it means layout and fastening should leave room for the wood to move, the same way any long cedar run does. See wood fence installation for how that plays into material choice generally.

Two board cross-sections side by side, exaggerated and labeled not to scale: one wider labeled as installed, green lumber, and one narrower labeled fully dry, with a dimension line between them reading 4.7 to 5.2 percent narrower, tangential, sourced to the USDA Wood Handbook, Table 4-3. A side note explains that across 213 feet of boards, this same small per-board shrinkage repeats many times, so layout and fastening should allow for wood movement rather than fight it. Why a long cedar run needs room to move Exaggerated for clarity — not to scale AS INSTALLED(green lumber) FULLY DRY 4.7–5.2% NARROWER, TANGENTIAL (USDA Wood Handbook, Table 4-3) ACROSS 213 FT OF BOARDS The same small per-board shrinkagerepeats dozens of times — layoutand fastening should allow forwood movement, not fight it.

Cedar privacy fence board & post estimator

Defaults to this project’s 213 ft run. Enter any fence length to see about how many boards and posts a flush-board cedar privacy fence takes. It’s arithmetic, not a manufacturer spec — no maker publishes a universal spacing number for job-built wood fences, and your builder may use a different post spacing.

Permit depends on height, not lengthLa Marque’s fence permit threshold is based on height (over 7 ft), per Sec. 71-21 — a 213 ft run and a 20 ft run are treated the same way. See the full La Marque permit guide linked below.

Board count: linear feet × 12 ÷ board width, rounded up. Post count: one post per spacing interval, plus one. Both are arithmetic shown here, not a manufacturer figure. Permit note: City of La Marque Code of Ordinances, Sec. 71-21, checked October 12, 2026.

Questions we get about this

Does a longer fence need a different permit in La Marque?
No — La Marque’s $100 fence permit threshold (Sec. 71-21) is based on height, over 7 ft, not length. A 213 ft run and a 20 ft run are permitted the same way; only the height decides it.
What does "4.7-5.2% shrinkage" mean for a cedar fence?
It’s the USDA Wood Handbook’s published tangential shrinkage range for redcedar lumber, green to fully dry (Table 4-3). It means boards narrow slightly as they dry — normal behavior, not a defect — and layout should leave room for it, especially across a long run with many boards.
How many boards does a 213 ft cedar fence take?
Use the estimator above, which defaults to this project’s 213 ft run: it calculates boards (linear feet × 12 ÷ board width, rounded up) and posts (one per spacing interval, plus one). It’s arithmetic, not a manufacturer figure.
Will Red Western Cedar stay reddish, or does it change color?
Left unstained, redcedar weathers to a silver-gray tone over time outdoors, the same as most untreated cedar. Staining is a separate choice that slows that color change; this page doesn’t state which finish was used on this specific project.
Do I need to call 811 before the post holes go in?
Yes. Fence post holes commonly go deeper than the 16 inches that triggers Texas’s one-call law, so whoever digs must notify 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. See calling 811 before a fence goes in.
