Given how narrow the island is here, most lots fall within 1,000 feet of the Mean High Tide, which triggers the coastal-division site plan on the city fence permit. With that little shelter we often steer exposed boundaries toward open ornamental or spaced designs and keep solid panels for pockets that already have some cover.

On a sheltered inland lot a solid privacy fence is the default. At the west end it is the hardest thing to keep standing, because wind arrives from either side and a solid panel presents a flat face to all of it. The fence does not fail at the panel — it fails at the post.
