Residential Security Fencing in Galveston, TX

A security fence won’t stop someone determined to get in. It makes getting in slow, visible and deliberate, which turns most people away. Get the height, style, gaps and gates right, within what the City allows.

The short answer

A fence deters and delays; it doesn’t stop a determined intruder. A defense standard puts standard chain link at about 7–15 seconds of delay. For a home in Galveston, the practical choices are these. Go up to 8 ft at the side and rear, and 4–5 ft in the front yard. Choose vertical pickets, which are harder to climb than chain link. Keep the bottom gap small, and make the gate as strong as the fence. Police CPTED guides favor see-through fencing where you can use it, because it lets neighbors and passers-by see in.

4–5 ftFront-yard limit: 4 ft solid, 5 ft if at least 60% see-through

What a security fence can and can’t do

  • It deters. A barrier that takes a deliberate act to cross turns away casual intruders.
  • It delays. Climbing, cutting or forcing takes time, and time gives someone a chance to see it.
  • It channels. One way in, through a gate you control. Police CPTED guides say the fence “sends the message that there is only one access point.”
  • It doesn’t stop a determined intruder. Pair it with lighting, locks and, if you want, cameras or an alarm.

This page covers the fence line around a home. For the entrance itself, see security gates and gate automation and access control. For a business, see commercial security fencing. To compare materials in depth, read the best security fence for a home.

Cross-section of an ornamental steel fence with vertical spear-top pickets on posts, up to 8 feet tall at the side and rear of a home and 4 to 5 feet in the front yard. The pickets stop 2 to 6 inches above the ground. Shaded strips on both sides of the fence are marked to be kept clear of bins, benches and stacked items, with shrubs trimmed low inside. Notes say vertical pickets give no footholds, spear tops facing a street need a check with the City, and the see-through fence lets people see in UP TO 8 FT* 2–6″ OUTSIDE: keep clear no bins, benches or stacked items INSIDE: keep clear too shrubs trimmed low so you can see out Vertical pickets, no footholds between the rails Spear tops: ask the City first if the fence faces a street See-through: neighbors and passers-by can see in (CPTED) *8 ft at the side and rear; 4–5 ft in the front yard

What happens at the estimate and install

  1. Free on-site estimate. We walk the property with you and look at what you want to protect. We note where the fence can be tall and where it must stay low, where people could get in, and what sits against the line.
  2. The plan. You choose the style, height and gates, and where the front yard ends. If you want an operator or access control on a gate, we plan that with the fence.
  3. The line. The fence goes inside your property line. A survey or the property pins settle it before any post goes in.
  4. Install and check. The posts, sections and gates go in. Then the latches and hinges are checked from both sides.

What affects cost and timing

You get a written price after the free on-site estimate. What moves it:

  • Style and material. Ornamental steel or aluminum costs more per foot than chain link or wood.
  • Height. Taller fences need taller, heavier posts and more material.
  • Gates and hardware. Lockable latches, heavier hinges and any gate operator or access control.
  • Length and layout. Corners, grade changes and tie-ins to the house.
  • Coating. Finishes made for salt air cost more and last longer near the Gulf.

Questions we get about this

What is the most secure fence for a home?
For most homes it is ornamental steel or aluminum with vertical pickets. It is harder to climb than chain link, and people can see through it. A solid privacy fence blocks the view in, but it also hides anyone who gets over it. See our guide to the best security fence for a home.
How tall can a security fence be at my house in Galveston?
In the City of Galveston, up to 8 feet at the side and rear of a home. In the front yard the limit is 4 feet for a solid fence, or 5 feet if it is at least 60 percent see-through. Other cities, such as Jamaica Beach and Tiki Island, have their own codes.
Can I put barbed wire or spikes on my home fence?
The City of Galveston’s residential fence rules don’t list barbed wire, razor wire or spikes. In nonresidential districts they are banned where visible from a public street, with a few exceptions. Ask the City before planning any of them at a home.
Will a fence stop a burglar?
Not on its own. A fence deters casual intruders and delays a determined one. A defense standard puts standard chain link at about 7 to 15 seconds of delay. Pair it with lighting, good locks and, if you want, cameras or an alarm.
Solid or see-through: which is safer?
Police crime-prevention (CPTED) guides favor fences you can see through where possible, such as wrought iron or chain link, because neighbors and passers-by can see into the yard. A solid fence gives privacy but hides anyone who gets over it.
How do I make the gate as secure as the fence?
Use a lockable latch and hinges that can’t be lifted off from outside, for example with reversed or welded hinge pins. Build the gate as strong as the fence and keep the gap under it small. For a driveway, see our security gate page.
Is financing available for a security fence?
Yes. Financing is available through the providers listed on our financing page, subject to credit approval.
