Automatic Gates for Business: What a Commercial-Duty System Actually Involves

A business entrance asks more of a gate than a driveway does: continuous duty cycles, fire-department access, flood-prone control boxes, and sometimes three-phase power. Here is the published equipment spec behind a commercial automatic gate, plus the compliance questions a site visit has to answer before anything gets quoted.

The short answer

Commercial automatic gates run on operators built for continuous duty, not the occasional cycle a house gate sees. Published LiftMaster commercial manuals rate their slide and swing operators for a Continuous maximum duty cycle, an operating range of -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F) without a heater, and up to 50 ft of slide travel or 115° of swing travel. On top of the equipment itself, a business entrance usually brings in questions a house gate rarely does: whether the gate crosses a fire apparatus access road (fire-marshal plan review), whether the lot floods (control-box elevation), and which UL 325 class the site falls into.

Slide, swing, or cantilever: a site decision first

Most commercial entrances use either a slide gate (often cantilevered, so nothing crosses the opening) or a swing gate, automated with a continuous-duty operator rather than the lighter-duty units sized for a single-family driveway. Which gate style fits a given entrance is mostly about the site -- available side room for a slide gate to park, ground slope, traffic volume -- and that construction-level comparison is covered in depth on our commercial gate installation page and our cantilever vs. V-track guide. This page covers what changes once that gate gets automated for business use.

An operator box sits inside the fence line, labeled UL 325-listed. A keypad or card reader pedestal stands at least 6 feet from the nearest moving part of the gate. Warning signs face both sides of the gate. A separate pedestrian walk gate sits beside the vehicle gate. A control box is shown mounted on stand-off legs above grade, noted as relevant on flood-prone lots. DRIVEWAY / ENTRANCE !! UL 325, ASTM F2200, and the fire code, in brief

The City of Galveston applies ASTM F2200 (gate construction) and UL 325 (the operator) to automated vehicular gates by name, and the 2021 International Fire Code requires that construction documents for "security gates across fire apparatus access roads" go to the fire department for review and approval before construction (2021 IFC §501.3). Both of those rules apply the same way whether the gate is at a house or a business, but a business site is more likely to actually cross a fire lane or serve enough people to land in UL 325 Class II, III or IV rather than Class I. For the operator-class table itself, see our commercial access control page; for the full entrapment-protection rules and construction sheets, see UL 325 & ASTM F2200 explained; for the fire-lane rules in depth, see fire department access for commercial gates.

On a low-lying commercial lot, the City’s flood damage prevention ordinance requires service equipment -- including electrical components like a gate operator’s control box -- to be elevated at least 18 inches above the base flood elevation and designed to keep water out. We cover sizing and placement in full on automatic gate openers in a Galveston flood zone.

Both are rated UL 325 Class I through IV and a continuous maximum duty cycle. The slide operator travels 4 to 50 feet at up to 1 foot per second; the swing operator travels up to 115 degrees, about 20 seconds per 90 degrees. Both operate from minus 20 to 60 Celsius, minus 4 to 140 Fahrenheit, without a heater, or minus 40 Celsius with the optional heater. Both accept up to 60 watts of 24 volt DC solar power, and both can be fitted with an optional transformer kit for 3-phase power. What a site visit for a commercial gate covers

A free on-site estimate for a commercial automatic gate typically looks at the opening width, available room for the gate to travel or swing, the property’s electrical service (including whether three-phase power is already run to the site), whether the gate crosses a fire lane, and whether the lot sits in a flood zone. Those answers point to an operator class and duty rating, not the other way around -- the site decides the equipment. For access-control credentials (keypad, card reader, telephone entry) sized to the expected number of users, see our commercial access control page.

Questions we get about this

What UL 325 class does a business gate need?
It depends on who the site serves, not the gate’s size -- multi-family housing, hotels and retail are typically Class II; a factory or loading dock not open to the public is typically Class III; a guarded, restricted site is Class IV. See our commercial access control page for the full class table and site examples.
How fast does a commercial automatic gate move?
Published LiftMaster commercial operator manuals rate a slide operator (CSL24UL) for up to 50 feet of travel at up to 1 foot per second, and a swing operator (CSW24UL) for up to 115° of travel, about 20 seconds per 90° (actual time depends on the mounting dimensions).
Does a commercial automatic gate need fire department approval?
If it crosses a fire apparatus access road, yes -- the 2021 International Fire Code requires construction documents for security gates across those roads to go to the fire department for review and approval before construction. See our fire department access guide for what the department actually checks.
Where does the control box go on a flood-prone commercial lot?
The City’s flood damage prevention ordinance requires service equipment, including electrical components, to be elevated at least 18 inches above the base flood elevation and designed to keep water out. See our gate openers in a flood zone guide for sizing and placement.
Can a commercial gate operator run on three-phase power?
Yes -- both the LiftMaster CSL24UL (slide) and CSW24UL (swing) commercial operators can take an optional field-installed Transformer Kit (Model 3PHCONV) rated for 208/240/480/575 VAC, 1 PH, relevant on a site that already runs three-phase service.
Is a commercial automatic gate just a bigger residential gate?
Not in how it’s rated. Residential operators are built around occasional, intermittent use; the commercial operators cited on this page carry a Continuous maximum duty cycle rating for many cycles a day. See our AC vs. DC gate operators guide for how that duty rating factors into choosing an operator.
