Custom Fence Design: Four Reasons a Project Isn’t "Off the Shelf"

A custom fence project usually starts with one of four things found on the property: a lot shape the stock layout can’t follow, a design that mixes materials, a section that has to match something already standing, or a code rule that changes what’s allowed. Each has its own detailed guide on this site -- this page is the map, plus the two parts that show up on the property itself.

The short answer

A fence project becomes "custom" for one of four real reasons, not just because someone asked for something nicer. The lot itself won’t take a stock layout -- an odd corner, a slope, or a utility easement the City requires crossing the fence line. The design mixes materials or finishes, like a wood-and-iron combination. A new section has to match something already standing. Or a code rule -- a pool barrier, a Historic District application, a slope or opening a stock panel can’t handle -- changes what’s allowed. Each of those has its own detailed page; this one is the map between them.

What actually makes a fence project "custom"

Every fence we build starts the same way: a free on-site estimate. What turns that visit into custom work is usually one of four things.

The rest of this page covers the two that show up on the property itself -- lot shape and mixed materials -- and routes to the other pages for the rest.

Elevation of a fence run with a solid picket fence on both sides and, in the middle, a section the width of a required utility easement. Instead of solid pickets, that section is a double swing gate of the same height and picket style, with hinges on the two gate posts and a latch in the middle. A note states the City of Galveston rule: no permanent structure may stand in a required easement except a fence built to allow the access needed to maintain it. Mixed-material design: what the joint has to handle

A wood-and-iron combination fence or gate is one of the most common custom requests. The design question is less about the look and more about the joint where the two materials meet -- a wood rail bracket lag-bolted into a shared post on one side, an iron frame bolted to a steel bracket on the other. Custom gate design covers the hardware and finish side of this in depth for a single gate opening; the same fastener rule applies on a fence panel.

Elevation of a shared post where a wood picket panel on the left meets an iron picket panel on the right. The wood side shows a rail bracket lag-bolted into the post. The iron side shows the frame bolted to a steel bracket on the post. A note states that fasteners touching both sides of this joint should be hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel, not plain steel, especially near salt air, per SFPA guidance. Questions we get about this

Can a custom-fabricated fence be made to match an existing fence or gate exactly?
Often, yes -- see our guide to matching an existing fence or gate for what weathering, color and galvanizing repair actually allow, and where an exact match genuinely isn’t possible.
Is a “custom” fence the same as custom fabrication?
Not always. Many fences sold as custom are a manufacturer’s stock panels with a choice of height, color and top style, which suit level, standard runs. Fabrication means the metal is cut, welded and finished to your measurements. You need it when the ground is steeper than the panel’s published rack limit (one aluminum line lists 12⅜ in across a 71 in panel), when no stock gate fits the opening, or when a pattern has to be matched. See what custom fence fabrication actually means.
Do you design fences that mix materials, like wood and iron?
Yes -- mixed-material designs are one of the most common custom requests. The detail that matters is the joint where the materials meet: fasteners touching both sides of a wood-to-iron joint should be hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel, not plain steel, especially near salt air (SFPA guidance).
Can you design around an irregular lot or a required easement?
Yes -- we walk the property during the free estimate specifically to plan around lot shape. Where a required utility easement crosses the line, City of Galveston rules (LDR §6.308(F)) don’t ban the fence there, but they do require the section to still allow access to maintain the easement, usually with a gate or removable panel. See our property line checker for the full easement and setback rules.
How much more does custom design work cost?
It varies by project. See our custom design: cost vs. a standard fence guide for the two City of Galveston rules that usually explain the difference -- we’ll give you an exact number after a free on-site estimate.
Do you offer financing for this project?
Yes, through GreenSky, Synchrony (including no-interest promotional periods), and Wisetack. See our financing page for current terms.
