League City’s fence rules, by the numbers

League City’s roughly 51.4 square miles sit mainly within Galveston County. Its Unified Development Code, Chapter 125 Article 4 Sec. 4.4 (“Fences, Walls, and Plantings”), is more specific than most of the towns on this site: a building permit applies once a fence passes 7 feet (the City’s own Permits page lists “Fences over 7ft”; shorter fences aren’t called out separately there, so we’d still confirm an unusual job with the Building Department rather than assume none ever needs one). At every corner lot, fences, walls and plantings are capped at 30 inches within 25 feet of where two rights-of-way meet, so drivers can see around the corner (Sec. 4.4.1).

Decorative metal and wrought-iron fences get their own numeric rule: up to 6 feet in any zoning district other than single-family residential, 6 feet on single-family lots of 20,000 square feet or more, and 4 feet on smaller single-family lots - and in every case at least 70% see-through, with masonry columns (if used) required at corners, turns and end points (Sec. 4.4.4). Chain link is banned from front yards but allowed in side and rear yards; barbed wire, razor wire, chicken wire, lattice and electrically charged fencing are banned everywhere, and no fence under 6 feet may carry broken glass, spikes or nails designed to injure (agricultural uses are exempt) (Sec. 4.4.2, 4.4.5). A fence on a side or rear property line may extend right up to - and into - the required setback there (Sec. 4.2.e).

What Sec. 4.4 does not do is set a separate height cap for a plain wood or vinyl privacy fence - the numeric limits above are written for decorative, see-through styles. If your plan is a solid privacy fence, the checker above flags that as a question for the Building Department rather than guessing at a number.

What’s allowed on the fence line, and where

League City draws a real line between the front yard and everywhere else on the lot - the diagram below shows what changes and what doesn’t:

Front yard versus side and rear yard rules. Front yard: chain link not allowed; decorative or wrought iron allowed at 4 to 6 feet and 70% see-through; solid wood or vinyl privacy height is not set by Section 4.4, confirm with the Building Department; corner lots add the 25-foot vision triangle. Side and rear yard: chain link allowed; a fence on the property line may extend into the required setback; decorative fences follow the same height and transparency rule if visible from a side street.
